Falkland was the first place in Scotland to be designated a Conservation Area and Arc was commissioned by Fife Council to write a Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan for this important royal burgh.

Growing as a settlement associated with the Stuart royal hunting Palace, the area subsequently developed around a 19thC. estate. In modern times, the burgh has become a popular visitor attraction and residential area.

The Appraisal & Management Plan is innovative in considering both the built and natural heritage aspects of Falkland, and developing partnership approaches to conservation involving the community, National Trust, Falkland Estate and Fife Council.
