This project focuses on bringing light and a modern open feel into
the family hub space of this fine Victorian villa.
Stripping away the roof and inside of an old extension, stone walls
were remodeled and overclad to create a large new space. A glass wall
slides away behind a granite screen, allowing the room to spill out
across a terrace and into the garden.
Externally, the extension is designed not to compete with the grand
massing and decorative detail of the villa, but is treated as a series
of planes, fragmenting into the garden landscape.
Local granite cladding echoes the villa stone, while living walls
of ivy climbing curved stainless steel trellises create sheltered spaces
and extend the playful synthesis of building and garden.
